Italy marks start of 2026/2027 school year amid reforms and infrastructure updates

As the 2026/2027 school year begins across Italy, various regions and institutions are reporting a mix of new developments, infrastructure challenges, and policy shifts.

In Piedmont, regional leaders Alberto Cirio and Daniela Cameroni are visiting schools to welcome students. Meanwhile, in Atri, a new €6 million earthquake-safe facility has been inaugurated to house 450 students. In the central regions, reconstruction efforts continue following the 2016 earthquake, with a €1.4 billion program underway to modernize school buildings.

However, significant challenges persist. In Campli, students face ongoing construction sites, delayed services, and accessibility issues. In Crema, recent ministerial reforms have caused administrative confusion and concerns regarding cuts to Italian and foreign language instruction. Additionally, religious leaders and organizations like UNICEF are emphasizing the importance of protecting children's rights and human dignity in the age of artificial intelligence.

In the agricultural sector, the municipality of San Vito dei Normanni is advocating for the Salento region to be recognized as a “disadvantaged area” or “agricultural crisis area” to protect workers and rural communities from long-term economic and environmental devastation.
