Bangladesh faces dual health crisis from measles and dengue

Bangladesh is facing a dual public health crisis as measles and dengue outbreaks overwhelm the national healthcare system.

A severe measles epidemic has resulted in over 1,000 deaths since March 15, including 100 laboratory-confirmed fatalities and 909 suspected cases. Despite an emergency campaign that vaccinated approximately 19.75 million children, health experts point to significant vaccination gaps and procurement issues that contributed to vaccine shortages. The outbreak has affected more than 189,000 people, with many cases occurring in vulnerable populations such as urban slum residents and marginalized communities.

Simultaneously, dengue fever cases are surging. In the first 13 days of September alone, 52 people died from the virus. Total dengue deaths for the year have reached 149, with hospital admissions exceeding 53,000. Health officials have warned that the situation in Dhaka and other districts may worsen in the coming months, as the disease has now spread to all 64 districts of the country.
