Ransomware attacks affect 83% of organizations, study finds

A study commissioned by Object First and conducted by consultancy Omdia reveals that 83% of organizations have fallen victim to successful ransomware attacks within the last 24 months. This marks an increase from the 66% reported in 2024. Furthermore, 75% of attacked organizations experienced multiple service disruptions.

The report highlights a declining ability to recover data following such attacks. Only 39% of organizations were able to recover at least 75% of their data, a significant drop from the 57% recorded in 2024. Additionally, 76% of organizations reported that their largest data loss incident exceeded their established objectives.

While 93% of technology executives consider absolute immutability—where data cannot be modified or deleted even by privileged administrators—to be a fundamental requirement for backup storage, only 16% believe their current environments meet this standard. This gap suggests that many organizations remain highly vulnerable to ransomware-driven data loss.
