Global ransomware trends and recovery challenges

Recent reports indicate a growing trend in ransomware vulnerability and a widening gap between organizational confidence and actual recovery capabilities.

A study by Omdia found that 83% of organizations were victims of successful ransomware attacks within the last 24 months, up from 66% in 2024. This period saw a decline in data recovery success, with only 39% of organizations able to recover at least 75% of their data. Furthermore, while 93% of technology executives view absolute immutability as a requirement, only 16% believe their current environments meet this standard.

Complementary findings from Veeam’s Data Trust and Resilience Report 2026 highlight a discrepancy in perceived readiness. Although 90% of organizations claim to trust their recovery capabilities, only 28% of ransomware victims achieved a complete restoration of affected data. Experts suggest that resilience should be measured by operational downtime and data loss tolerance rather than the mere existence of backups. Current data shows that while 90% of companies believe they can recover within their Recovery Time Objectives (RTO), only 69% consider these objectives to be fully aligned with actual business needs.
