Balkan politics: Tensions rise over Ratko Mladic legacy and Sarajevo Safari

Political tensions regarding the legacy of Ratko Mladic have resurfaced across the Balkans. In Montenegro, opposition parties including the Democratic Party of Socialists (DPS) and the Civic Movement URA walked out of a parliamentary session. The walkout followed debates concerning Mladic and the refusal of the parliamentary majority to address the responsibilities of Assembly President Andrija Mandic regarding the Srebrenica genocide convictions.

In the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), Bosniak Party MP Edina Dešić signed a declaration condemning the state glorification of Mladic and his funeral ceremonies. The declaration seeks to reject attempts to deny or celebrate his crimes, including the Srebrenica genocide and the siege of Sarajevo.

Separately, the Council of Europe has postponed a decision on the 'Sarajevo Safari' resolution until December. This resolution addresses allegations that foreign nationals paid to participate in sniper activities against civilians during the Siege of Sarajevo. The decision follows intense debate within the Committee on Legal Affairs and Human Rights.

Additionally, the 'World for Bosnia' initiative and Professor David Pettigrew have called on European Commissioner Marta Kos to halt EU funding to Serbia and impose sanctions on officials involved in the glorification of Mladic.
