Ratko Mladić memorial and Republika Srpska political shifts spark Balkan tensions
A religious memorial service was held at the Topčider cemetery in Belgrade to mark 40 days since the death of Ratko Mladić, the former commander of the Army of Republika Srpska. The ceremony was attended by his family, veterans, and various political figures, including officials from Republika Srpska. Mladić, who was convicted of genocide and war crimes by the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia, passed away in The Hague.
The commemorations have coincided with rising political tensions in the Balkans. In Republika Srpska, leadership has signaled an intent to return to the original Dayton Agreement, seeking to reclaim competencies that were transferred to the state level of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Officials suggest these moves aim to reverse processes they deem illegitimate.
Meanwhile, the State Prosecutor's Office of Bosnia and Herzegovina addressed concerns regarding the glorification of war criminals. While the office reported receiving thousands of citizen emails and several political complaints regarding social media posts and media commentary, they stated that no official police reports regarding the incitement of national or religious hatred have been received since Mladić's death.
