Ratko Mladić's remains arrive in Belgrade amid EU diplomatic tension

The return of Ratko Mladić's remains to Belgrade has triggered significant diplomatic tension between Serbia and the European Union. Mladić, the former commander of the Army of Republika Srpska, died on August 27 while serving a life sentence in The Hague for genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity. His body was flown from the Netherlands to Belgrade and received with military honors, an act that has drawn sharp condemnation from EU officials.

EU enlargement chief Marta Kos cancelled her planned visit to Serbia, stating that the “glorification” of the convicted war criminal is incompatible with European values. Similarly, Bosnian Presidency member Denis Bećirović described the state-level honors as an “uncivilized and unacceptable act” that insults the victims of genocide.

In Belgrade, a commemoration was held at the House of the Serbian Armed Forces, attended by Serbian Justice Minister Nenad Vujić and various officials from Republika Srpska. While the Serbian government maintains the event was organized by a veterans' association rather than the state, the presence of high-level officials has fueled international criticism.

Mladić's son, Darko Mladić, has accused the Hague tribunal of medical negligence, claiming his father was killed due to the intentional administration of strong opiates and inadequate care. The funeral is scheduled for September 7 at Topčider Cemetery in Belgrade, where he will be buried alongside his daughter, Ana.
