Ex Ilva: Milan court denies stay of execution for plant shutdown

The Court of Appeal of Milan has denied a request for a stay of execution regarding the Ex Ilva plant, ruling that the right to health takes precedence over economic interests. This decision mandates the shutdown of blast furnaces, a move that has sparked significant concern regarding the potential industrial desertification of Taranto.

In response, the Italian government, represented by Undersecretary Alfredo Mantovano, is exploring legal avenues to prevent a complete shutdown of the facilities. The administration aims to keep the plants in a state of readiness to avoid rendering any future decision by the Supreme Court of Cassation moot. The government's long-term strategy involves transitioning to green steel production using DRI plants and electric furnaces.

While the legal battle continues, Acciaierie d'Italia is suspending production activities in the hot area of the Ex Ilva plant. The Prosecutor General of the Cassation has reportedly noted the correctness of the government's actions, and a hearing regarding the appeals is scheduled for October 20.
