Rawalakot crackdown in Pakistan‑occupied Kashmir leaves dozens dead and sparks region‑wide protests

Pakistani security forces opened fire on a protest in Rawalakot, Pakistan‑occupied Kashmir (PoK) on the night of June 7, killing at least 16 people and injuring dozens, with some reports suggesting up to 27 dead and nearly 200 wounded. The incident triggered a shutdown across PoK: banks, shops and transport services were closed, internet and mobile services were suspended, and the Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC) was banned under anti‑terrorism laws.

Massive protests spread to other towns in PoK, with demonstrators demanding relief from rising food and electricity costs, an end to subsidies for regional officials, and greater political representation. Protesters blocked the Karakoram Highway and held rallies despite a heavy security presence.
