Rayo Vallecano stadium closure forces club to seek alternative venue
The Community of Madrid has revoked Rayo Vallecano's concession to use the Estadio de Vallecas and ordered urgent renovation work, citing serious safety, hygiene and maintenance deficiencies. The stadium was declared unsafe, prompting the regional government to plan emergency works that could keep the venue closed for two to six months.
Rayo Vallecano players, led by captain Óscar Valentín, issued a joint statement condemning the situation and blaming ignored warnings. The club responded by cleaning the stadium and addressing critical systems within 72 hours to meet regulatory standards.
Technical staff from the Community attempted to enter the stadium on two separate days but were blocked, leading the regional authority to file a police complaint. While the dispute continues, the club has prepared a contingency plan, selecting El Plantío in Burgos as a provisional home ground should the authorities not authorize matches at Vallecas. Political figures, including Minister Félix Bolaños and Community minister Mariano de Paco, have publicly debated the revocation.
