Rayo Vallecano stadium dispute and fan protests
Overview
The dispute over Rayo Vallecano’s access to the Estadio de Vallecas has escalated into a legal and administrative conflict with the Community of Madrid. While the club has performed maintenance, the regional government recently rejected a request for a precautionary measure to allow a La Liga match against Deportivo Alavés to be held at the venue, forcing the team to continue playing in “exile” at the Butarque stadium. The club has accused the Community of Madrid of manipulating an audit report used to justify the stadium's closure. Rayo Vallecano alleges that a document presented as a July 2026 audit was actually a file created on December 12, 2025, which was later converted to PDF and signed. The club claims authorities withheld inspection results for over seven months and maintains they have provided valid documentation regarding fire protection, water control, and electrical systems, including a certificate valid until 2028. Internal pressure from supporters and stakeholders has intensified. The Plataforma ADRV and the Federation of Rayo Vallecano Supporters' Clubs have organized large-scale demonstrations in the Puente de Vallecas district, with hundreds of fans demanding the resignation of president Raúl Martín Presa and the return of home matches to Vallecas. Protesters have criticized management for the stadium's deterioration, while regional authorities maintain the closure is due to the club’s failure to meet maintenance obligations. In mid-September 2026, the Community of Madrid lifted the closure of the Vallecas Stadium, allowing Rayo Vallecano to return to their home ground. This decision followed a second audit by the company Instalaciones Cedial, which concluded that the facilities are “operative and in adequate condition for normal functioning.” Mariano de Paco Serrano, the Counselor of Culture, Tourism, and Sport, signed the order to suspend the precautionary measure that had been in place since July 27.
