Raytheon F-35B demonstrates rapid launch of eight StormBreaker weapons

Raytheon has successfully demonstrated the ‘ripple-eight’ capability, where an F-35B launched eight StormBreaker smart weapons in rapid succession during a flight test in Arizona. This capability allows a single fifth-generation fighter to deliver concentrated precision strikes in one attack sequence, potentially reducing the need for multiple passes over contested or defended airspace.

The StormBreaker munition utilizes a tri-mode seeker combining millimeter-wave radar, imaging infrared, and semi-active laser guidance. This technology enables the weapon to strike both stationary and moving targets in adverse weather conditions, smoke, or degraded visibility, with a stated range of over 45 miles against moving targets.

The integration is particularly significant for the F-35B, the short takeoff and vertical landing variant used by the United States Marine Corps. Because the F-35B can operate from amphibious assault ships and expeditionary bases, increasing the number of precision strikes per sortie enhances the firepower available from small or dispersed forward-deployed air elements.
