F-35 aircraft precision strike capability testing

Recent developments in F-35 aircraft capabilities have focused on validating precision-strike effectiveness through live-fire exercises and advanced munitions integration.

In August 2026, the U.S. Air Force conducted the Combat Hammer 26.07 Weapon System Evaluation Program at Hill Air Force Base. This exercise utilized the F-35A Lightning II to test the entire strike chain using live ordnance in mountainous terrain, rather than simulated environments. The drills aimed to ensure crews could arm, launch, and recover aircraft with the speed required for high-intensity operations.

Following this, Raytheon demonstrated the ‘ripple-eight’ capability with the F-35B variant in Arizona. This test involved the rapid launch of eight StormBreaker smart weapons in a single sequence. The StormBreaker munition uses tri-mode seeker technology to strike stationary and moving targets in adverse conditions. This capability is noted as particularly significant for the F-35B, as it increases the firepower available to dispersed air elements operating from expeditionary bases or amphibious ships.
