Dominican Republic expands digital literacy and tech training initiatives
The Dominican Republic is implementing several large-scale digital and technological initiatives. The national AI literacy program, RD Inteligente, has reached 54,000 registered participants in just 16 days, aiming for a goal of one million citizens. This program is executed by the Instituto Tecnológico de las Américas (ITLA) to provide free access to AI tools for academic and professional use.
Additionally, the government has launched “Talent Up,” a regional initiative supported by the Inter-American Development Bank, Google Cloud, and Cisco Networking Academy. This program offers 15,000 free technology scholarships focusing on cloud data, cybersecurity, and STEM to bridge the skills gap in the nation’s free zones. Over 14,000 people have already registered for these scholarships.
In the realm of public safety, the National Emergency and Security System 9-1-1 has introduced advanced technological capabilities, including drones (VAPRE-M2) and robotics from Boston Dynamics. These tools, integrated with NVIDIA-powered AI, are designed to provide real-time imagery and support decision-making in high-risk emergency scenarios.
These efforts come amid discussions regarding the effectiveness of historical educational support. Data shows that while the state has granted over one million scholarships in the last decade through various institutions, companies continue to report difficulties in finding candidates with the specific technical skills required by the modern labor market.
