Real estate experts warn of property purchase and rental fraud in Mexico

Real estate professionals in Mexico are warning consumers about various fraud tactics used during the purchase or rental of properties. Common red flags include unusually low prices, urgent requests for deposits, and pressure to finalize deals through “unique offers.”

In San Luis Potosí, reports have emerged of individuals posing as agents and requesting between 3,000 and 4,000 pesos to “reserve” a home, only to cease communication afterward. Experts advise against making payments based solely on business cards or verbal promises.

To mitigate risks, specialists recommend verifying the legal authority of the seller, checking for property liens, and ensuring all utility services are paid up to date. For rentals, it is essential to confirm the person offering the property is the owner or an authorized representative. Utilizing professional real estate advisors and working with trusted notaries are also suggested to ensure legal certainty and contract transparency.
