Comics Festival poster sparks controversy over religious imagery

A controversy has emerged regarding the poster for the Comics Festival, which features a provocative reimagining of Lorenzo Lotto’s masterpiece, ‘Annunciation of Recanati’. The artwork depicts the Madonna, the Archangel, and God as nude figures wearing masks and gloves, styled in a cyberpunk aesthetic.

The imagery has drawn significant backlash from religious communities who view the depiction as offensive and blasphemous. In response, the Municipality of Recanati requested that festival organizers remove the city’s logo from the poster. Additionally, a legal challenge has been initiated in court regarding the matter. The debate centers on the boundaries of artistic freedom and whether the transformation of deeply rooted sacred imagery into provocative modern styles crosses a line into offense.
