A controversy has emerged in Recanati regarding a promotional poster for the 2026 Comics Festival. The artwork, created by Spanish artist Miguel Angel Martin for the Arcadia Cultural Association, features a cyberpunk reimagining of Lorenzo Lotto’s 16th-century masterpiece, ‘The Annunciation’. The depiction includes nude figures wearing masks and accessories such as collars and harnesses.

Religious communities have criticized the imagery as offensive. In response to the backlash, the Municipality of Recanati requested the removal of the city’s logo from the poster. The situation escalated when lawyer Mario Pinelli filed a formal complaint with the Macerata Prosecutor's Office, seeking the seizure of the poster. Pinelli alleges religious blasphemy and the denigration of sacred iconography, describing the work as a “vulgar, parodic, and sacrilegious reworking” that constitutes an “outrageous mockery of Catholic symbols.”
