Receita Federal notifies 498,000 taxpayers of income tax discrepancies
The Receita Federal has launched 'Projeto Cartas 2026', sending notices to 498,487 taxpayers whose 2026 Individual Income Tax (DIRPF) declarations have been flagged for inconsistencies, commonly known as 'malha fina'. The letters are being sent in weekly batches through October 20.
The initiative aims to encourage voluntary self-regularization before formal tax audits or notifications are issued. Taxpayers who identify errors can submit a rectifying declaration through digital channels, such as the 'Meu Imposto de Renda' website or mobile app, without needing to visit a physical service unit.
Correcting errors early helps taxpayers avoid potential fines of up to 75% of the tax due and prevents delays in receiving tax refunds. Common issues leading to these flags include unrecorded income, errors in medical expense deductions, and discrepancies in retirement income reporting. To check their status, taxpayers must use a Gov.br account with silver or gold level access.
