Recife and Rio de Janeiro advance housing regularization for thousands
The Recife municipal government regularised 359 homes in the Várzea neighbourhood and handed out 166 definitive property titles, bringing the total of regularised properties in the city to 21,152 and directly benefiting 12,310 families. Mayor Victor Marques highlighted that over 80% of the new titles were issued to women heads of household, underscoring the program’s focus on social inclusion.
In Rio de Janeiro, Caixa Econômica Federal launched a "Casa em Dia" debt‑negotiation campaign from 8 to 12 June, offering special terms for mortgage contracts overdue by 60‑90 days. The mutirão, held at the Passeio Corporate building, aims to help borrowers restructure payments and avoid foreclosures, with Caixa’s housing superintendent Claudio Martins stressing the partnership with local developers to preserve home ownership.
Both initiatives are part of Brazil’s broader effort to regularise informal housing and sustain the mortgage market.
