Recife shelter under investigation after disappearance of 22 dogs
Animal protectors in the Recife metropolitan area are reporting the disappearance of at least 22 dogs from a shelter located in Jaboatão dos Guararapes. The Civil Police are currently investigating the case under judicial secrecy.
Legal representative Anaís Araújo stated that owners, who paid monthly fees between R$ 400 and R$ 600 per animal for temporary housing, began reporting missing pets in early April. When owners attempted to retrieve animals due to suspected mistreatment, many found that several dogs were missing. In one instance, a protector who left 34 animals was only able to recover 20.
Pet Help Recife, an entity involved in the complaint, has denied the accusations. The shelter's management stated that legal measures are being taken in both civil and criminal spheres, maintaining that the funds provided by owners were donations rather than contracted monthly fees.
