Pet Help Recife animal mistreatment allegations

Overview

Allegations of animal mistreatment and irregularities surfaced against the Pet Help Recife shelter following reports shared on social media by the animal protection initiative ‘Todos Por Guerreiro’. Initial accusations included difficulties in obtaining information regarding the status of rescued animals, reports of animal deaths, and the disappearance of numerous pets.

As the situation developed, it was reported that at least 22 dogs had disappeared from a shelter in Jaboatão dos Guararapes. Legal representative Anaís Araújo noted that owners, who paid monthly fees for temporary housing, began reporting missing pets in early April. In one reported instance, a protector was only able to recover 20 out of 34 animals.

The Civil Police have launched an investigation under judicial secrecy. Pet Help Recife has denied the accusations, stating that management is pursuing legal measures in civil and criminal spheres. The shelter further maintains that funds provided by owners were donations rather than contracted monthly fees.
