Sicily faces record diesel prices as fuel costs soar above €2.30 per litre

Diesel prices in Sicily have risen to more than €2.30 per litre, with some self‑service stations on the Messina‑Palermo highway reporting even higher rates. Gasoline is also near €2.00 per litre, making the island one of the most expensive regions for fuel in Italy.

The surge is linked to rising international oil prices after heightened tensions in the Strait of Hormuz, a key global oil transit point. Consumer groups such as Codacons warn that the higher costs threaten household budgets, increase prices for goods and services, and could dampen tourism during the summer peak.

The business association Confesercenti estimates an additional €700 million in fuel‑related expenses for families and small firms during July‑August, translating into roughly €7 extra per 50‑litre petrol fill‑up and €11 for diesel. The groups are urging the government to intervene, tighten oversight of the fuel supply chain and consider measures to offset the fuel tax burden.
