Record traffic volumes strain Czech D1 highway in Vysočina region

The D1 motorway in the Vysočina region of the Czech Republic is experiencing record traffic, with some sections seeing up to 58,000 vehicles per day. Trucks account for more than a quarter of the flow, leading to frequent jams, accidents and longer travel times. Police reports indicate dozens of fines issued daily as drivers contend with dense traffic and increased collision risk.

In 2025 the area recorded 3,608 road accidents, including 24 fatalities, a 4.4% rise from the previous year. Authorities advise motorists to keep safe distances and drive cautiously, especially during peak periods and holidays. While recent modernisation of the D1 has improved safety and flow, congestion remains high. Completion of the parallel D35 highway is expected to divert some transit traffic and alleviate pressure on the D1 corridor.
