Recovery and suicide prevention awareness intersect in September

September is recognized as both Recovery Month and Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, highlighting the intersection of addiction, mental health, and trauma. In Fort Frances, Canada, Deputy Mayor Michael Behan has proclaimed September 22, 2026, as ‘Fort Frances Battles For Recovery Day’ to support individuals overcoming addiction and mental health challenges. The town will raise the Empower2Recover Foundation flag to show solidarity with those in recovery.

Research published in Injury Prevention suggests a significant overlap between these two observances. Analyzing U.S. data from 2000 to 2024, researchers Ian Rockett and Eric Caine noted that while suicide rates rose 37.5 percent and drug poisoning deaths more than tripled, the number of overdose deaths officially recorded as suicides remained low. Rockett estimates that up to 30 percent of overdose deaths classified as accidental or undetermined could actually be suicides, noting that many overdoses result from ‘motivated behaviors’ rather than strict accidents.
