Red Bull disputes FIA engine benchmark ruling

Red Bull Racing and driver Max Verstappen are disputing the FIA’s recent rulings regarding the Additional Development and Upgrade Opportunities (ADUO) engine system. Despite the team’s claims that their Red Bull-Ford power unit is not the strongest package, two separate FIA assessments have designated it as the benchmark combustion engine.

Because Red Bull is considered the benchmark, they have been denied the extra homologation opportunities and development tokens awarded to rivals like Mercedes, Ferrari, Honda, and Audi. This lack of concessions prevents Red Bull from upgrading its engine, even as competitors introduce new packages.

Former driver David Coulthard has criticized the ADUO system, arguing that it is unfair because it only measures the internal combustion engine rather than the entire power unit, which includes critical electrical components. Verstappen noted that the team is currently in talks with the FIA regarding next year and expressed concern that the disadvantage could widen as rivals bring upgrades to upcoming races.
