Austrian Grand Prix 2026 faces heat risk and driver talks

The 2026 Austrian Grand Prix at the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg will be run under a FIA‑declared “heat‑risk” status as forecast temperatures are expected to exceed the 31 °C threshold. Teams must install driver cooling systems, which add five kilograms to the cars’ minimum weight, though the use of cooling vests is not mandatory. Drivers commented on the conditions: Isack Hadjar called the heat “not nice”, while Sergio Perez noted the temperatures felt “average” to him.

Red Bull will bring its largest upgrade package of the season to the Austrian round, aiming to bring the RB22 to the minimum weight and improve performance. Ferrari, Mercedes and McLaren have also announced technical updates for the event, intensifying the off‑track battle for championship points.

Ahead of the race, Max Verstappen is scheduled to meet Red Bull executives to discuss his contract, which runs to 2028 but contains a clause that could allow an early exit. Media reports suggest the Dutch champion may consider leaving the team after the season. Meanwhile, Kimi Antonelli leads the drivers’ standings, with Lewis Hamilton and George Russell close behind as the championship battle heads into a crucial stage.
