Red Cross provides cash aid to flood survivors in Nepal and Malawi

Red Cross organizations in Nepal and Malawi are implementing cash assistance programs to aid families recovering from devastating floods.

In Nepal, the Nepal Red Cross Society has signed an agreement with the Ministry of Women, Children, Gender and Sexual Minorities, and Social Security to provide Rs 100,000 to eligible households affected by the Bhotekoshi flood. Preliminary estimates indicate nearly 6,000 families have been impacted. The funds will be deposited directly into bank accounts to ensure transparency, allowing families to prioritize needs such as food, health, and rebuilding livelihoods. Priority will be given to vulnerable groups, including women-headed households, people with disabilities, and senior citizens.

In Malawi, the Malawi Red Cross Society has provided cash assistance to survivors in the Machinga District following heavy rains and floods earlier this year. Beneficiaries received K90,000 monthly for three months to support recovery efforts. This intervention has enabled at least 1,425 households to move from temporary shelters into permanent housing by purchasing building materials and molding bricks. Local disaster management officials noted the assistance helped families transition from emergency relief to long-term reconstruction.
