The Saudi‑led coalition carried out airstrikes on the Houthi‑controlled port city of Hodeidah (Hudaydah) in western Yemen, targeting telecommunications facilities and the nearby island of Kamaran. The coalition said the attacks were aimed at "military positions" that threatened commercial shipping in the Red Sea.

In response, the Iran‑backed Houthi movement announced a maritime blockade of Saudi vessels and struck at least three Saudi‑flagged oil tankers in the Red Sea, including the NCC Masa and Encelia. The attacks pushed Brent crude above $100 a barrel and prompted UN Secretary‑General António Guterres to warn that the escalation “risks exacerbating regional tensions and feeding a cycle of escalation that could drag Yemen further into a regional conflict.”

The fighting has heightened concerns over the security of the Bab al‑Mandeb strait, a key chokepoint for global oil and trade flows, and has drawn statements of support from Iran, which is reported to have sent IRGC commanders and missile components to the Houthis. The United States, Iran, Saudi Arabia and Yemen are all directly involved in the widening confrontation.
