Red‑alert haze risk threatens Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia and Brunei in 2026

The Singapore Institute of International Affairs (SIIA) issued a rare “Red” risk warning for severe transboundary haze in 2026, citing the combined impact of an El Niño‑driven dry season, rising biofuel demand and economic pressures. The institute warned that Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia and Brunei could face the most dangerous haze conditions in August and September, the peak period identified in its Haze Outlook 2026.

Indonesia has stepped up its fire‑prevention measures, establishing a Forest and Land Fire Coordination Desk, improving monitoring and expanding community firefighting capabilities. The report called for stronger ASEAN cooperation, investment in sustainable land management, and greater enforcement to curb the risk of large‑scale forest and peatland fires.

SIIA chairman Simon Tay stressed that while the weather outlook is bleak, proactive steps by governments, businesses and communities can prevent the worst outcomes and enhance regional climate resilience.
