Red‑light traffic violations rise in Brazil's Federal District
A study by fintech Zapay shows that red‑light violations in the Distrito Federal increased sharply between the January‑May periods of 2025 and 2026. The number of fines grew from 48,942 to 52,944, an 8.18% rise, contributing to an overall 16.26% increase in this type of infraction. Each violation carries a penalty of R$293.47 and seven points on the driver’s licence. The data, confirmed by the Distrito Federal traffic department (Detran‑DF), also involve the Federal District police (PMDF) and road agency (DER‑DF).
Other traffic offenses showed similar trends: seat‑belt fines rose 9.07% and vehicle‑lighting‑related fines rose 11.89%. Speeding remains the dominant breach, accounting for 55.83% of all fines in the region—almost double the national average of 32.62%. The report includes local observations, such as a 73‑year‑old resident’s fears about drivers ignoring pedestrian signals on Avenida Alagados.
Detran‑DF says patrols, electronic radar monitoring and increased enforcement are being used to curb the rise in dangerous driving behaviours.
