A referee was injured during a Kreisliga football match in Siegen-Wittgenstein after being physically attacked by a player. The incident occurred during a game between SC Siegen and SV Setzen 2 following a goal that brought the score to 3-4.
According to reports, the 22-year-old player from the host team reacted to a referee's decision by threatening the official. When the referee attempted to issue a red card, the player grabbed the official by the waist, lifted him, and threw him backward onto the pitch. The match was subsequently abandoned.
The victim sustained minor injuries and has filed a criminal complaint with the police. Authorities stated that the attacker could face a fine or a prison sentence of up to five years. In addition to criminal proceedings, the regional sports court is scheduled to hold a hearing this coming Thursday to address the sporting consequences of the assault.
