Regenerative dentistry advances toward biological tooth regrowth
Research in regenerative dentistry is advancing toward biological tooth repair and regrowth. Scientists in the US and UK are exploring "living fillings" that use stem cells and chemical signals to recreate enamel and dentin. This could allow damaged teeth to be biologically rebuilt rather than merely patched.
Researchers at King's College London have successfully combined human gum cells with mouse tooth-forming cells to create a hybrid structure with living, developing roots. Other studies involving human and porcine cells with bioengineered scaffolds have shown structures developing similarly to natural molars in miniature pigs. While these advancements aim to replace artificial implants with biological tissue that integrates with the body, human trials have not yet begun.
Parallel to technological shifts, experts are calling for a change in how dentists communicate with patients. Instead of focusing on unattainable standards of perfection, dental professionals are encouraged to set realistic, achievable goals that account for individual lifestyle barriers and motivations to ensure long-term behavioral changes in oral hygiene.
