Advancements in regenerative dentistry research

Researchers in the US and UK are advancing regenerative dentistry techniques aimed at biological tooth repair and regrowth. Current efforts focus on moving beyond traditional fillings, crowns, and implants toward solutions that stimulate the body to rebuild dental structures.

Key developments include the investigation of proteins involved in dentin formation at the University of Illinois Chicago and the exploration of ‘living fillings’ at the University of Washington. These methods utilize stem cells and chemical signals to recreate enamel and dentin. At King’s College London, scientists have successfully combined human gum cells with mouse tooth-forming cells to produce hybrid structures with developing roots. Other studies using bioengineered scaffolds with human and porcine cells have produced structures that mimic natural molars.

While these advancements aim to integrate biological tissue with the body, human trials have not yet commenced. Researchers note that improving oral health through these technologies could address broader systemic issues, as gum disease is linked to cardiovascular, respiratory, and potentially neurological diseases.
