Reggio Calabria dialysis crisis prompts calls for urgent regional intervention

FINTRED has called for urgent action from regional authorities regarding the dialysis crisis in Reggio Calabria. Following comments by Guido Bertolaso, the organization highlighted the impact on 36 patients who were forced to find new care facilities after the suspension of treatments at the Centro San Giorgio.

To ensure continuity of care, patients have been moved to night shifts at the Grande Ospedale Metropolitano, with treatments sometimes lasting until 1:00 AM. This has created significant physical and psychological strain on patients and their families. FINTRED also pointed to a structural disparity in the Calabrian renal-dialysis network: while the North (Cosenza) and Center (Catanzaro) regions have 156 and 144 kidney places respectively, the South (Reggio Calabria) has only 98 places across six centers.
