Reggio Calabria hosts Carabinieri 212th anniversary ceremony

On 5 June, Reggio Calabria commemorated the 212th anniversary of the Carabinieri’s foundation with a large ceremony on the Lungomare Falcomatà. The event, attended by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Defence Minister Guido Crosetto and Chief of Defence Staff General Luciano Portolano, featured an aerial display by the Carabinieri Paracadutisti Tuscania, parades of the force’s mobile, special, training, territorial and environmental units, and the oath‑taking of cadets from the 144th class of the Reggio Calabria academy. The Special Intervention Group (GIS) staged a simulated ship‑boarding operation as part of the tactical showcase.

To ensure security and smooth traffic flow, the city imposed extensive road closures and pedestrian restrictions from 4 June through the ceremony day. Major thoroughfares on the Lungomare, several historic squares and key streets were banned to vehicular and foot traffic, with alternative routes signposted and enforced by local police in coordination with Carabinieri command. The measures were lifted after the event concluded on 5 June.
