Reggio Emilia releases 1,800 appointments for electronic ID cards
The Reggio Emilia Civil Registry has released 1,800 new appointment slots for October to facilitate the issuance of electronic identity cards. This initiative aims to replace paper identity documents, which are no longer valid for international travel as of August 3, 2026, and will cease to be valid for domestic identification within Italy after January 31, 2027.
Since the beginning of the year, the local registry has replaced 9,498 identity cards, leaving approximately 6,000 residents still requiring digital replacements. Citizens are encouraged to book appointments via the dedicated call center at 0522 585958 during specified weekday hours.
Under Decree Law n. 108/2026, paper documents remain temporarily valid only for specific, limited purposes until the January 2027 deadline. Residents with existing appointments who wish to book additional slots are requested to cancel their previous bookings to ensure availability for others.
