Regional Australian fuel retailers hit by shortages as major oil contracts prioritize urban supply

A surge in global demand after the Strait of Hormuz closed led major oil companies to honour existing supply contracts, leaving independent regional fuel retailers in Australia without guaranteed deliveries. Operators who rely on spot‑market purchases, such as Nathan Falvo of Robinvale's Happy Valley store, saw their servos run dry within weeks. More than 500 regional service stations experienced fuel shortages, causing diesel prices to jump sharply and disrupting planting, harvest logistics and trucking operations for farmers.

Representatives of NSW Farmers and the Australasian Convenience and Petroleum Marketers Association said the crisis highlighted the commercial priority given to contracts over geographic equity. The episode has revived calls for the government to revisit fuel‑stockholding policies and consider stronger security measures for rural fuel supplies.
