Latin American nations implement climate and water management strategies

Various Latin American nations are implementing measures to mitigate the impacts of the El Niño phenomenon and manage water resources. In Peru, the Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation (MIDAGRI) and the National Water Authority (ANA) have initiated river cleaning and desilting operations in Tumbes to prevent flooding. Additionally, the government has allocated over S/1.8 billion for prevention and response, targeting 536 critical points across the country. In Áncash, investments are being made to reduce risks and improve agricultural irrigation.

In Uruguay, experts warn of an unusual and potentially historic El Niño event that could cause significant rainfall and flooding, particularly in the north and northeast, threatening the agricultural sector. Meanwhile, in the Dominican Republic, the National Irrigation Technification Directorate (TNR) is promoting agricultural technology to combat climate change effects.

In Chile, the Aysén River Basin is coordinating through a strategic water resource table to ensure water security. In Argentina, authorities in Mendoza are increasing budgets for riverbed maintenance to prepare for potential floods, while specialists in Colonia Benitez provide technical guidance for livestock management during excessive water periods. In Bolivia, the government is seeking international cooperation and financing to address climate change and water scarcity through legislative and technical initiatives.
