Chilean water security and infrastructure initiatives

Overview

Chile has initiated several programs and infrastructure projects to address water security and scarcity, particularly in rural and agricultural sectors.

Initially, the National Irrigation Commission (CNR) announced funding opportunities to support agricultural productivity and climate change adaptation. These included $600 million for irrigation technification and infrastructure in the Los Ríos region, as well as a $650 million national contest to improve irrigation water quality, with $200 million specifically allocated to the Atacama and Coquimbo regions.

Following these funding announcements, specific water infrastructure projects were inaugurated in the Biobío and Araucanía regions. In Santa Bárbara, the ‘Desafío Agua para Chile’ program implemented a potable water distribution network including a deep well and chlorination system for local residents. Additionally, in Lumaco, a new 100,000-liter potable water tank and lifting plant were operationalized to provide supply for approximately 630 families.
