Religious tensions rise in Kosovo over planned church construction

Tensions have emerged in Kosovo regarding the planned construction of a Catholic church in the village of Zogaj, within the Vushtrri municipality. The project, led by the Prizren-Prishtina Diocese, sparked protests from local residents in surrounding villages. The Islamic Community of Kosovo (BIK) in Vushtrri expressed concerns, noting that the area is predominantly Muslim and lacks a resident Catholic population, suggesting that projects perceived as provocative should be handled with maturity.

In response to the controversy, the Catholic Church clarified that a recent ceremony on August 17 was merely a blessing of the land and the placement of a foundation stone, not the start of construction. Father Fran Kola stated that the local authorities and police had been notified. To maintain peace, certain religious activities, such as baptisms, were moved to the Mother Teresa Cathedral in Prishtina.

Separately, Blerim Nika has addressed his return to the Catholic Church, describing it as a personal spiritual decision. He emphasized that his public activities remain focused on Albanian national identity and the principle of state secularism, asserting that religious ideology should not influence state administration or the rights of citizens.
