Religious tensions in Vushtrri over church construction

The Islamic Community Council in Vushtrri, Kosovo, initially opposed a proposal to build a Catholic church in the Zogaj area. The council described the project as “provocative,” questioning its necessity in a locality without reported Catholic residents and warning that construction near 5th-century paleo-Christian foundations could damage historic heritage. As tensions escalated, local residents in surrounding villages held protests. The Islamic Community of Kosovo (BIK) in Vushtrri reiterated that the predominantly Muslim area lacks a resident Catholic population and urged that perceived provocations be handled with maturity. In response, the Prizren-Prishtina Diocese clarified that a recent ceremony was only a blessing of the land and the placement of a foundation stone, rather than the commencement of construction. To mitigate conflict, certain religious activities were relocated to the Mother Teresa Cathedral in Prishtina. Conflict intensified when the Kosovo Police initially blocked a foundation stone blessing ceremony scheduled for August 18. The Diocese criticized this intervention, labeling it “unconstitutional, illegal, and unjustified.” Protesters associated with the ‘Movement for Return’ gathered in Zogaj to oppose the construction of the Catholic Church of Saint Flori and Lauri, characterizing the project as a divisive movement influenced by Serbian-Russian directives. To avoid further escalation, Archbishop Dodë Gjergji performed the blessing on Monday, August 17, under the supervision of increased police forces to monitor the situation. While some protesters stated they are not against the Catholic faith itself but rather against groups they claim are attempting to incite sectarianism, local commentators have defended the right to religious expression, emphasizing the region's historical tradition of interfaith coexistence. Following the incidents in Zogaj, observers have expressed concern that rising religious tensions threaten Kosovo’s social cohesion and traditional interfaith coexistence.
