REN Atlântico workers strike at Sines LNG terminal

Workers at the Sines Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) terminal, operated by REN Atlântico, have initiated a three-day strike from August 23 to 25. The industrial action, organized by the SITE Sul and Fiequimetal unions, seeks the implementation of a pre-retirement plan to compensate for the physical toll of long-term shift work. Workers are also demanding the correction of wage inequalities for employees performing identical roles.

The strike has raised concerns regarding energy security in Madeira. The Regional Secretary of Economy for Madeira, José Manuel Rodrigues, has requested urgent measures from the Ministry of Environment and Energy to ensure gas supplies remain uninterrupted. He noted that natural gas is essential for the Vitória Thermal Power Plant (CTV3), which accounts for approximately 35% of the region's thermal energy production capacity. Rodrigues warned that any disruption could compromise the stability and reliability of the electricity supply for the population and local economic activities.
