REN Atlântico workers strike at Sines LNG terminal

Workers at the REN Atlântico liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal in the Port of Sines have launched a strike with reported 100% participation during the initial shifts. The strike, which began at midnight and is scheduled to run until Tuesday, was organized by the SITE Sul and Fiequimetal unions.

The primary demands involve the implementation of an early retirement plan to compensate for the physical toll of shift work. Workers are seeking conditions similar to those provided under the ACT 2000 agreement. Additionally, the unions are calling for the correction of wage inequalities among employees performing identical roles.

Union representatives noted that many employees have already averaged 20 years of shift work. They argued that without a medium-term early retirement plan, some workers could face nearly 47 years of service under these conditions. While the strike has halted tanker refueling, unions stated that minimum services are being respected to maintain normal weekend supply levels to the network.
