IAA Transportation 2026 showcases shift to electric and hydrogen vehicles

The IAA Transportation 2026 trade fair in Hannover has highlighted a major shift in the commercial vehicle industry toward electrification and hydrogen technology. Major manufacturers are unveiling aggressive product roadmaps to meet decarbonization goals.

Volvo Cars announced its largest product offensive to date, planning to launch 13 new electrified models by 2030, including seven for Western markets and six specifically for China. Similarly, Volvo Trucks secured the International Truck of the Year 2027 award for its full electric heavy-duty range. Renault achieved success with the Trafic Van E-Tech electric, named International Van of the Year 2027.

Hydrogen technology is emerging as a critical pillar for heavy-duty transport. A coalition including Bosch, Volvo Group, Daimler Truck, and Toyota revealed a joint roadmap to deploy hydrogen trucks in Europe by 2030. Toyota showcased its third-generation fuel cell systems, ranging from 110kW to 300kW, aiming to act as a mobility platform provider. Additionally, Toyota confirmed the production of a hydrogen-powered Hilux FCEV starting in 2028.

Chinese manufacturers, including BYD and FAW Trucks, demonstrated significant presence at the event, signaling their intent to compete directly with European brands in the medium and heavy truck segments.
