Rimini Meeting: Ex-Ilva crisis and Southern Italy R&D funding
During the Rimini Meeting, several key economic and social issues were addressed. Minister of Enterprises and Made in Italy, Adolfo Urso, discussed the future of the ex-Ilva steel plants in Taranto. He confirmed that four major entities, including a significant Italian coalition and a large European operator, are competing for the plants. A government meeting at Palazzo Chigi is scheduled for September to examine interest manifestations and develop an extraordinary plan for the territory, following a court decree requiring the closure of the hot area by late October.
In terms of regional development, MIMIT announced over 505 million euros for research and development projects in Southern Italy to boost innovation and competitiveness. Additionally, the GSE reported significant progress in Renewable Energy Communities (CER) in Italy, noting 48,750 requests under the PNRR, with 30,299 admitted, totaling 779 million euros in grants and 1,763.6 MW of capacity.
Other discussions at the meeting included the right to housing as a social infrastructure, the role of digital fiber networks in social inclusion, and the importance of supporting internal areas to prevent depopulation. Vice-premier Antonio Tajani also expressed opposition to windfall profit taxes, advocating instead for tax reductions to drive growth.
