Renewable energy firms expand battery storage and grid capacity in Spain and Romania

Iberdrola has awarded contracts totaling 30 million euros to Ingeteam and Ormazabal to advance energy storage and grid capacity in Spain. Ingeteam will receive 25 million euros to implement Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) for renewable installations, aimed at increasing grid flexibility. Ormazabal has been tasked with the design and supply of two mobile substations, valued at approximately five million euros, to support the electrical grid during maintenance or peak demand.

In Romania, Econergy Ltd has commenced commercial operations for the battery storage component of its Parau 1 hybrid solar and storage project in Brașov. The BESS component features a 70 MW power rating and 141 MWh capacity, integrated with an existing 92 MW photovoltaic plant. This hybrid configuration allows the project to import electricity from the grid to charge batteries during low-price periods and discharge when prices are higher, increasing the facility's total installed power to 162 MW.
