Renewable energy trends drive market volatility in Spain and Southeast Europe

Renewable energy expansion is creating complex market dynamics across Europe. In Spain, a surge in solar power has frequently driven wholesale electricity prices to zero or negative levels during peak production hours. This trend is undermining the financial viability of new photovoltaic projects, with reports indicating that approximately half of new renewable projects in the country are failing to reach the construction phase. While large utilities can absorb these shocks, smaller independent producers face significant distress due to the mismatch between peak generation and grid storage capacity.

In Southeast Europe, a different trend emerged during Week 42, where a 30.1% increase in renewable electricity production failed to lower costs. Despite a major recovery in wind generation, wholesale power prices rose across several markets, including Serbia, Bulgaria, Croatia, Romania, Hungary, and Greece. This divergence is attributed to the timing of generation relative to consumption peaks and transmission constraints that prevent low-cost renewable energy from moving freely between surplus and deficit zones.
