Honduras and Peru advance national identification and electoral preparations

In Honduras, the Registro Nacional de las Personas (RNP) has intensified efforts to provide National Identity Documents (DNI) to minors. Commissioner Óscar Rivera reported that approximately 100,000 children and adolescents have already been enrolled through mobile brigades visiting public and private schools. The initiative aims to reach 1.5 million minors by the end of 2026, providing documents that include biometric data and photographs to facilitate various legal and travel procedures.

In Peru, preparations for the Regional and Municipal Elections on October 4, 2026, are underway. The National Office of Electoral Processes (ONPE) has begun registering the 809,415 citizens designated as polling station members, offering a compensation of S/ 165 for those who fulfill their duties. Additionally, ONPE has relocated a polling site in Chincha Alta due to infrastructure reconstruction at the original site.

Simultaneously, Peru’s Registro Nacional de Identificación y Estado Civil (Reniec) is conducting a campaign to provide free electronic DNIs to vulnerable populations, including seniors and people with disabilities, through September 6. In Arequipa, Reniec has annulled nearly 1,000 address changes to prevent ‘voter migration’ (voto golondrino), ensuring citizens vote in their actual districts of residence ahead of the upcoming elections.
