Renán Barrera resigns from PAN national committee amid internal rift

Renán Barrera Concha, the former mayor of Mérida and former gubernatorial candidate, has announced his resignation from the National Executive Committee (CEN) of the National Action Party (PAN). While Barrera stated he will remain a member of the party, he leveled sharp criticisms against national leader Jorge Romero, accusing the leadership of yielding to “vile interests” and rewarding “traitors.”

Barrera’s departure highlights a growing internal rift within the PAN, particularly regarding the selection of candidates for the 2027 elections in Yucatán. He alleged that future candidacies in the state would be distributed among specific political groups, including former governor Mauricio Vila Dosal and Mayor Cecilia Patrón Laviada.

In Yucatán, state PAN president Álvaro Cetina Puerto responded by stating that Barrera has clearly chosen a separate path, but denied that candidacies are already predetermined. Meanwhile, in Campeche, municipal PAN leader Juan Portela Rodríguez described the situation as a “grave political crisis,” accusing Romero of acting for personal interests and undermining the party’s unity.
