Internal PAN political conflict in Yucatán

Political tensions have escalated within the National Action Party (PAN) in Yucatán. Former Mérida Mayor Renán Barrera Concha announced his resignation from the party’s National Executive Committee (CEN), though he stated he remains a member of the party.

Barrera criticized national leadership under Jorge Romero, accusing the party of yielding to “vile interests” and rewarding “traitors.” He further expressed dissatisfaction with local leaders, including former Governor Mauricio Vila and current Mérida Mayor Cecilia Patrón Laviada, regarding the selection of candidates for upcoming elections. Barrera characterized the current management as involving “simulation and incongruence,” suggesting that future candidacies in Yucatán may be distributed through political favoritism rather than merit.

In response to the resignation, Yucatán PAN president Álvaro Cetina Puerto stated that Barrera has “clearly chosen a separate path,” though he denied that candidacies are already predetermined. The rift has also drawn criticism from other regions; in Campeche, municipal PAN leader Juan Portela Rodríguez described the situation as a “grave political crisis,” accusing Romero of acting for personal interests and undermining party unity. This internal conflict is viewed as a potential fracture that could weaken the party’s opposition strategy ahead of the 2027 elections.
